You want a number. I understand exactly why — you have computed your engagement rate, it came out at some figure, and you have no idea whether to be pleased or panicked. A benchmark would settle it in one second.
I am not going to give you one, and I want to be straight about why rather than hiding behind "it depends."
Why won't anyone just tell me the number?
Nobody can tell you the number because no published, credible benchmark for engagement rate on Skool exists — not from Skool, and not from any study I can point you at. So anyone quoting you "a good Skool engagement rate is 15 percent" is doing one of three things: quoting a figure from a completely different platform, reporting their own community and generalising from a sample of one, or making it up because a confident number performs better in a headline than an honest hedge.
If I printed a number here, thousands of owners would measure themselves against something I had fabricated. Some would conclude they were failing when they were doing well. Others would conclude they were fine while their community quietly died. That is worse than useless.
What I can do is show you why a universal number cannot exist, and give you a method that produces a baseline you can trust. The closest thing to real data is our own: measured across 20 Skool communities in July 2026, the median 90-day participation rate was 27.4 percent, with the middle half of communities between 15.3 and 34.4 percent — a spread wide enough to make the point, and reported with its limits in Skool participation benchmarks.
Are we even measuring the same thing when we say engagement rate?
Usually not — engagement rate has two common meanings that are not close to each other, and that definition problem swallows most of the disagreement before the size-and-niche argument even starts.

As of July 2026, Skool's own dashboard reports engagement on a visit basis. Check your own dashboard rather than taking that on trust, because Skool ships changes often.
The punchline is worth sitting with: the visit-based number is always the bigger and more flattering one. A community can post a healthy-looking engagement percentage while almost nobody is talking, because opening the app counts. Participation rate is the smaller, harsher figure, and the more useful one, because it only moves when somebody chooses to contribute.
Neither definition is dishonest; one is about attention, the other about contribution. But if you are comparing your figure to someone else's, establish which one each of you is quoting before drawing a conclusion. Caveat on the Skoolgrades side: per-post like data is not captured, so participation means comments, comment replies and poll votes, not likes.
What actually moves my engagement rate up or down?
Five things move a Skool engagement rate several-fold — size, free versus paid, price point, niche and community age — so check all five before comparing yourself to anyone. If they differ, the comparison is noise.
1. Size
This is the big one, and it is arithmetic rather than skill. A room of thirty people where everyone recognises everyone will beat a room of three thousand on percentage terms, permanently. Every new member enters the denominator on day one and the numerator only if they speak. Larger rooms are also structurally harder to post in — more perceived audience, more sense that someone else will answer.
A community that grows tenfold and holds its engagement rate flat has, in real terms, improved dramatically. If your rate is drifting down while raw participant counts rise, you are probably fine.
2. Free versus paid
A free community collects people who clicked a link once. A paid one collects people who entered a card number. The filter alone changes participation enormously, and free communities with an open door accumulate dormant members faster than they can activate them.
3. Price point
Within paid, price sorts people further. A community at a few dollars a month behaves like a newsletter with a comment section. A high-ticket room behaves like a cohort, because people who paid serious money show up to justify the spend. Comparing a low-priced community to a premium mastermind on participation rate tells you about pricing, not community management.
4. Niche and format
Some topics are inherently conversational. Anything where members have work to show, problems to debug, or wins to report generates comments naturally. Other topics are consumption-shaped — people join for the course, watch the course, and have genuinely nothing to say. That is not a broken community. It might be a correctly-designed one where the value is the material.
The honest question is whether your members are getting what they came for, and participation is only a proxy for that.
5. Age
New communities are noisy. The founding cohort is excited, everyone introduces themselves, and the first month looks spectacular. Then it settles. A two-year-old community carries years of accumulated dormant members in its denominator that a two-month-old one simply has not had time to collect. Comparing them is comparing a wedding to a marriage.

Stack three or four of these and two communities that are both healthy can sit a factor of five apart. That is the whole argument.
What should I compare my engagement rate against instead?
Compare your engagement rate against your own community a month ago, because your own trend is the only benchmark that controls for all five factors automatically — all five are held constant when the community being compared is yours.
Here is the method.
- Fix your definition. One window, one denominator, one list of what counts. If you have not done this, how to calculate Skool engagement rate walks it through with worked numbers.
- Record it weekly, in a spreadsheet, with a notes column. Date, participants, denominator, rate, and one line about anything unusual that week.
- Do this for six to eight weeks before drawing any conclusion. A single reading is not a baseline, it is a data point with no context — exactly the thing you went looking for a benchmark to escape.
- Compute your normal range, not your normal number. After eight weeks you will have something like "usually between 17 and 23 percent." That range is your benchmark. It is worth more than any published figure could be, because it is measured on your definition, your members and your niche.
- React to the range being broken, not to weekly wobble. Two consecutive weeks below your floor is a signal. One week below it is a Tuesday.
The useful question is never "is 12 percent good?" It is "is 12 percent better or worse than I was doing, and which direction have the last four weeks gone?"
Watch the composition alongside the level, too. A flat rate hides a lot: it can mean the same forty people every week, or a rotating cast where twenty leave and twenty new ones arrive. The second is healthier and looks identical from the top line. Splitting by tenure, as described in Skool member retention, pulls those apart.
How do I know if my level is normal, not just my direction?
Knowing whether your level is normal takes a comparison against genuinely comparable communities, because your own trend only tells you the direction — a community can decline steadily from a bad starting point and still look stable.
That gap is what peer comparison is for, and the requirement is brutal: the comparison set has to be genuinely comparable. Similar size band, similar free-or-paid, roughly similar niche shape, roughly similar age. A peer benchmark against a random assortment of communities is just a fancier version of the invented number.

Even with a good peer set, treat the result as context rather than a verdict. If you are well below comparable communities, that is a prompt to look at how to increase Skool engagement — not evidence of failure. If you are well above, resist the temptation to relax; the number that matters next week is still your own trend.
When is a low engagement rate actually fine?
A low engagement rate is genuinely fine in three situations, and in each of them I would leave it alone.
- Consumption-shaped value. People join, take the course, get the result, and leave satisfied. If retention and refund rates are healthy and members report getting what they paid for, a quiet feed is a format outcome, not a failure.
- A deliberate quiet room. Some communities are libraries or archives on purpose. Loudness is not the product.
- Right after fast growth. Add 400 members in a month and your rate will fall mechanically. Look at raw participants instead for a couple of months, and split out the new cohort's activation rate separately.
And one case where a high rate should worry you: if it is high because you personally comment on everything. Recompute with yourself excluded. Founder-driven engagement is real work and it does not compound.
So what is a good Skool engagement rate, in one paragraph?
There is no single good Skool engagement rate, and the people quoting you one do not have data behind it. Build your own baseline over six to eight weeks, learn your normal range, and treat departures from that range as the signal. Add a peer comparison against genuinely similar communities if you want to know whether your level as well as your direction is reasonable. That combination is boring, slower, and the only version that will not mislead you.
